A new political chapter began in Bihar as Samrat Choudhary took oath on Wednesday, 15th April, as the Chief Minister, becoming the first leader from the BJP to hold the post in the state. Along with him, senior JD(U) leaders Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Choudhary were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers.
The change in leadership comes after Nitish Kumar decided to move to the Rajya Sabha, bringing an end to his long tenure as Chief Minister. Nitish Kumar, who had taken oath for a record 10th time in 2025 after the NDA’s big win in the assembly elections, congratulated Samrat Choudhary and expressed confidence in his leadership. In a message, he said he believes Bihar will move faster towards development under the new Chief Minister.
After taking the oath, the new Deputy Chief Ministers spoke about the continuity of governance and alliance unity. Bijendra Prasad Yadav dismissed any talk of a rift between the BJP and JD(U), saying this is once again an NDA government and there is no reason for concern.
Vijay Kumar Choudhary also thanked Nitish Kumar for trusting him with the new responsibility. He said the government will continue to work on the path shown by Nitish Kumar and take forward the schemes started during his tenure. He described Nitish Kumar’s style of governance as strong and said the new leadership would follow the same direction.
Vijay Kumar Choudhary is already handling important departments, including Water Resources, Parliamentary Affairs, Information and Public Relations, and Building Construction.
At 57, Samrat Choudhary now steps into a major role, taking charge after more than a decade of Nitish Kumar’s leadership, often associated with the idea of “Sushasan” or good governance. His appointment marks a shift in Bihar’s politics, with the NDA entering a new phase under BJP leadership while continuing its alliance with JD(U).
No other minister was inducted into the ministry today. As per reports, the cabinet expansion may take place after 4th May, after results for the ongoing assembly elections are declared.
