The women of the gang were trained to act as new brides initially and go through the process of marriage, then use sedative drugs to make the family fall asleep at an opportune moment and flee with all the jewellery and valuables.

After receiving complaints, the authorities raided multiple locations and nabbed the accused. Cash worth Rs 5 lakhs and other valuables like jewellery and mobile phones have been recovered.

SSP Mohammad Mushtaq informed that the gang targeted families and convinced them for marriage . Further investigation is ongoing, he added.

Organised marriage gangs are notorious in UP and nearby states. Several instances of fraudulent marriages and duping families of money have surfaced in recent years. The women in the gang play the roles of bride, bride’s mother and other family members to convince the groom’s family. Well-to-do families who are desperate to find brides for their sons fall into their trap and eventually get robbed.
