The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday (13th June) carried out raids at seven properties linked to TMC MLA and former Minister Madan Mitra in connection with a municipal recruitment scam. The Kamarhati MLA reportedly facilitated around 125 such illegal appointments. The ED officials are examining the evidence, including documents and digital devices recovered during the raids.
A team from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate raided the MLA’s residence, ‘Uday Villa’.The police found the premises locked, but they broke the lock, entered the building, and conducted the search. It is said that the land on which the villa is erected belongs to a central government agency,
This property of Madan Mitra is not merely a hub for fraudulent activities but a glaring example of illegal encroachment. It is alleged that the entire structure was built on land belonging to a Central Government agency. The police are now investigating the details of this ‘land jihad’ and the illegal construction. Several confidential documents were also recovered from the site.
The ED came to know about the municipality recruitment scam while carrying out a raid at the residence of Ayan Sheel, a promoter linked to the TMC. The agency had conducted the raid at Sheel’s residence in connection with a money laundering case involving the West Bengal school recruitment scam.
The documents and information found by the ED during the raid led to the unravelling of the municipal recruitment scam. Subsequently, following a Calcutta High Court order, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also initiated a parallel probe into the ‘cash-for-municipal-jobs’ case. As the investigation by both agencies progressed, the names of influential political individuals, including state ministers and leaders of the then-ruling TMC, emerged.
