In a disturbing incident that happened in the Muzzarfarpur district of Bihar, a young woman belonging to the OBC Yadav community was strangled to death by her family after she married a man from the Mahadalit community.
As per reports, the incident came to light after the husband of the deceased posted a video on social media expressing suspicion that his wife might have been killed. When the police came across the video, an investigation into the whereabouts of the woman was launched.
During the investigation, the police found that the woman had been killed by her brother and her body was disposed of by burning near the bank of the river Gandak in the Siwaipatti police station area. The victim, Sujata Kumari (22), a resident of Panapur Gangwar Chakki, had married Gaurishankar Kumar (23), a resident of Ghansot village and belonging to the Mahadalit community.

Sujata met Gaurishankar when she was pursuing her studies in her maternal grandparents’ home in Ghansot village. They grew fond of each other and had been in a relationship for 6 years since 2020. They got married about 6 months ago in Samastipur. Sujata’s family was not happy with her marriage to Gaurishankar because of the caste difference. Due to the disapproval of her family, the couple left their homes on January 18, 2026 and started living in Sonipat, Haryana.
Sujata’s family lodged a complaint alleging her abduction. Acting on the complaint, the police recovered the couple from Sonipat on February 11, 2026 and produced them in court a day later. In the court, Sujata stated that she was an adult and had married Gaurishankar of her own free will. She said that she wanted to live with him.
After giving a statement before the court, Sujata started living at her maternal aunt’s house, while Gaurishankar was remanded to judicial custody. According to Gaurishankar, during this period, Sujata’s family took her back to her paternal house. He said that he last spoke to his wife on March 31, 2026, after which he could not contact her.
According to the police, Sujata was strangled to death on the night of May 8, 2026, and her body was taken to the banks of the Gandak River and cremated to destroy the evidence. The police have arrested her brother in connection with her killing. He reportedly admitted that she was killed and that five people were involved in her killing. A team of FSL collected the evidence from the spot where she was cremated.
