On Monday (24th August), the Editors Guild of India (EGI) came out in support of controversial ‘journalist’ Rajdeep Sardesai, accusing the social media handles of the ruling BJP govt of targeting him as ‘Dimagi Naxal.’
“Rajdeep Sardesai, in his long public career as a journalist and TV anchor, has been objectively presenting and analysing news developments. By no stretch can his actions and utterances be termed those of a ‘Dimagi Naxal’,” the EGI claimed.
It further took offence to the statement of BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi wherein he laid out the fact that ‘intellectual naxals’ sympathised and provided support to the Naxals on the ground, celebrated the death of security personnel and encouraged street violence.

The Editors Guild of India then mouthed platitudes about ‘press freedom’ in India. It is important to note that in 2020, Rajdeep Sardesai had extended his support to uban naxal Gautam Navlakha over his arrest in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon case.
3 years later, a Mumbai court observed that Navlakha was indeed a member of banned terrorist organisation, Communist Party of India (Maoist).

One may also recall how Rajdeep Sardesai had described the 2001 Parliament attack as a ‘great day’. This is despite the fact that the attack was carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammed and claimed the lives of 9 security personnel.
It must also be noted that Rajdeep Sardesai was rattled after Prime Minister highlighted the need to isolate ‘Dimagi Naxal.’ Since a guilty conscience needs no accuser, netizens were quick to draw parallels between him and ‘Dimagi Naxal.’

While the Editors Guild of India is notorious for selective outrage, its Chairman Sanjay Kapoor seems to be in the same league as Rajdeep Sardesai.
In one tweet, Kapoor was seen engaging in whatbaoutism to defend AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, who has now been convicted in the murder case of Intelligence Bureau official Ankit Sharma.
In another tweet, the now-Chairman of the EGI was seen extending support to Umar Khalid, who advocated for Kashmiri separatism and called it ‘Indian-occupied territory. Khalid had previously glorified terrorist Burhan Wani and is an accused in the 2020 anti-Hindu Delhi riots.
He was also seen peddling conspiracy theories about the Modi government undermining India’s territorial integrity and ‘compromising’ with China.
