PM Modi hails 7.8% growth, urges Indians to embrace Swadeshi and avoid unnecessary foreign spending

On Tuesday, 1st September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India’s 7.8% economic growth, calling it a reflection of the country’s collective strength and the hard work of its people. PM Modi also urged citizens to give a stronger push to the “Swadeshi” and “Vocal for Local” approach by reducing unnecessary spending abroad, including leisure travel and destination weddings, and avoiding gold purchases unless needed.

Sharing a video message, Modi said India had managed to maintain strong growth despite a difficult global situation marked by wars, crises and disrupted supply chains. He credited the people of India for the country’s performance and said the achievement showed what could be achieved through collective effort.

“Many congratulations to the people of the country. 7.8% growth. The country is filled with happiness. But I congratulate the people of the country for their resolve and their hard work. This is a reflection of a collective strength,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister pointed to the uncertainty that has continued across the world since the Covid-19 pandemic. “The world is immersed in war. News of war is coming from all around. The world is surrounded by crises. The supply chain is completely disrupted. From the Covid period in 2020 till now, stability is not visible anywhere. Despite that, India is progressing at a fast pace,” he said.

Taking a dig at those he described as spreading negativity, Modi said there were also people within India who were “drowned in despair” and spreading what he called “jhooth ki goonj”, or an echo of lies.

‘Swadeshi’ push after strong growth

Modi said India would have to maintain its growth momentum and become more self-reliant. “Overcoming these things, piercing through all those talks, the country has achieved 7.8 per cent growth. We have to maintain this momentum. We have to move forward, and for that it is very important to become Atmanirbhar Bharat. The mantra of Swadeshi, vocal for local,” he said.

As part of this push, the Prime Minister asked people to think carefully about spending money overseas. He specifically appealed to citizens not to travel abroad simply for leisure and not to organise weddings in foreign destinations when they could be held in India.

“If you go for travel abroad just for leisure, you should not do it. You do weddings outside, in foreign countries, you should not do it. You should live the mantra of Made in India,” Modi said.

He also asked people to avoid buying gold unless there was a genuine need. “If there is no need, then one should not even buy gold,” he said.

‘More Swadeshi, more self-reliance’

The Prime Minister said promoting domestic products and businesses would strengthen India’s self-reliance. “The more we emphasise Swadeshi, the more we emphasise self-reliance,” he said.

Modi linked these efforts to the larger goal of building a Viksit Bharat by the time India completes 100 years of Independence. He said the country’s present generation had a responsibility to create better opportunities for young Indians in the future.

“I have firm faith that when India completes 100 years of independence, we will present a developed India to our young generation,” Modi said. “We will make the dreams of our young generation a reality through our hard work today.”

Modi calls for collective effort

Modi ended his message by asking citizens to contribute to the country’s growth and maintain the momentum created by the latest economic numbers.

“And therefore, my fellow citizens, let us leave no stone unturned in our hard work. Our policy is right, our intentions are clear, and the strength of 140 crore Indians is today united to take the country to new heights,” he said.

Calling on people to turn the latest growth figures into a larger national resolve, Modi concluded, “Celebrate the happiness, make a resolve, and set out with me to fulfil that resolve.”
