Earlier, in the morning, the Delhi Police detained influencer and AAP supporter Dhruv Rathee and CJP’s legal cell head Ratna Singh at their respective residences. CJP’s policy head Mehr was also detained by the Delhi Police. Hundreds of suspected protesters were also detained by the police overnight from various parts of Delhi.
Delhi Police have imposed Section 163 of the BNSS in several parts of the national capital to prevent CJP supporters from gathering in response to the party’s call for a protest. Yesterday (October 9, 2026), the police had turned down the CJP’s request to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar in the guise of demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The police denied permission to protest, citing short notice, law and order concerns, and the past conduct of the CJP during its June protest organised on the issue of the NEET exam paper leak. The protest that started as an agitation for students’ issues soon turned violent, violating police directions and the CJP’s own undertaking. The protesters engaged in widespread violence that continued for days, holding the national capital hostage. They attacked police personnel as well as journalists and damaged public property and police vehicles.
Security measures have been tightened across Delhi in view of the CJP’s call for protest. Over 20,000 personnel from the police and the Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed across the national capital to maintain law and order. Authorities have also enhanced surveillance to watch people’s movements.
