As the news of police conducting lathi-charge against stone-pelting CJP mob trickled in, Abhijit Dipke announced that merely after 48 hours, he had decided to end his “indefinite” hunger strike. Abhijit Dipke claimed that the decision had come after Sonam Wangchuk, who is also about to end his ‘indefinite’ hunger strike had asked him to join the CJP Parliament March.
According to Indian Express, Dipke drank juice after Gitanjali Angmo, Wangchuk’s wife, announced from the Jantar Mantar protest stage that Wangchuk had urged Dipke to break his fast because he needs energy to continue the protest. Soon after, Dipke and Angmo joined the protest march to Parliament. Along with them was the father of Riya Kumari, a NEET aspirant who died by suicide.
It was on the 18th, merely 48 hours ago, that Dipke had claimed he would sit on an “indefinite” hunger strike till the CJP demands were met. He was demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the time.

After announcing his “indefinite hunger strike” for the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, Dipke had also claimed that he was upgrading his demand. He said he could no longer be satisfied only with the resignation of the education minister but now would also demand the resignation of the Prime Minister.

With no resignations, CJP’s Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das and Sonam Wangchul climb down demands
After 21 days of protest and 48 hours of Abhijit Dipke’s indefinite hunger strike, nobody from the government had resigned – not the education minister or the prime minister. Given their predicament, Sonam Wangchuk was the first to water down his demands. On the morning of 20th July, Sonam Wangchuk had also released a list of his updated demands. He had said that he will end his fast on 20 July if any of the 3 conditions are met. Govt takes accountability for paper leaks, or CJP marches to Parliament & MPs agree to raise issue in House, or Political leaders come to meet him at hospital. This was seen as a significant climb down from his earlier position since the list did not include the demand for Dharmendra Pradhan to resign.
After Wangchuk’s statement, CJP too watered down their stance and claimed they were ready for dialogue with the government. Ahead of the proposed Parliament March from Jantar Mantar amid tight security arrangements, Saurav Das, the spokesperson of the CJP, said they were “willing to talk to the government” to “resolve the impasse surrounding the education system”. It is noteworthy that hours before Saurav Das’ statement, Sonam Wangchuk had also released a list of 3 demands which did not feature the demand for Pradhan’s resignation.
No permissing sought for march, stone pelting by CJP mob reported during Parliament March
Supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party unleashed violence on Monday (20th July) under the garb of a peaceful march to the Union Parliament.
The incident occurred near Kerala Bhawan, where the ‘protestors’ breached police barricades and resorted to stone pelting. Soon after, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) carried out 2 rounds of lathi-charge to bring the law and order situation under control.

Reportedly, supporters of the CJP ran towards the barricades and tried to push through the security cordon. The Delhi police had made it clear that no permission had been given for the Parliament march.
Delhi Police on Saturday (18th July) said that the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) will not be allowed to organise its proposed march to Parliament tomorrow (20th July). According to the Delhi Police, the party has not sought permission from the police to organise the march, which coincides with the first day of the Monsoon Session of the Parliament.
