Ahmedabad, Gujarat: 195 Hindu refugees from Pakistan granted Indian citizenship at special event, 122 under CAA

In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a total of 195 Hindu refugees from Pakistan were given Indian citizenship at a special event held in the presence of Deputy CM Harsh Sanghvi and Minister of State for Urban Development Darshanaben Vaghela.

122 of the 195 persons were granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), while 73 persons got their citizenship application approved by the District Collector’s office, under existing rules.

“Today is a moment of great joy for 195 people receiving citizenship at once, a scene rarely seen in other states. Those who came to India as refugees after years of hardship are now active participants in the nation’s development”, Harsh Sanghvi stated at the event. Sanghvi hailed PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for bringing the CAA, which ensures dignity for persecuted minorities from the neighbouring countries who have sought refuge in India.

The Deputy CM also praised the Ahmedabad District Administration for consistently working to process citizenship certificates for ligitimate applicants who have been living in India for years after escaping from Pakistan.

Desh Gujarat mentioned that Dr Mahesh Purohit, a gynaecologist, has been living in India since 1956.
