Two Muslim students of Aligarh Muslim University, Shahbaz and Najeeb, have been arrested and sent to jail after a Hindu doctor was threatened and harassed near the campus in Aligarh.
Hindu doctor threatened and harrassed
The incident took place on 14th April when Hindu Dr Kulwant Singh, a resident of Nagalia Mev in Gajraula, Amroha, came to the AMU campus to meet a female friend studying there. After meeting her, he left in an e-rickshaw, but was stopped by a group of Muslims near the campus.
According to his complaint, four youths first confronted him and started misbehaving. Soon after, they called more people to the spot, and within minutes, around 30 individuals had gathered and surrounded him.
Threats and intimidation
The doctor said the group abused him and made serious threats. They told him that AMU is a “Mini Pakistan” and warned that he would be “slaughtered and buried there.” He was also told that his family would not be able to find him and that he would face severe consequences.
During the confrontation, one of the youths claimed to be a second-year MTech student. The group also recorded a video of the incident while continuing the intimidation. The doctor further said he was repeatedly told that the campus is dominated by one community.
Call to 112 and immediate response
Dr Kulwant quickly called the 112 emergency helpline for help after feeling trapped by the mob.
Before the police arrived, the AMU proctorial team reached the spot and took him to the proctor’s office for safety. His mobile phone was kept for some time during questioning. Shortly after, the police team reached and, after gathering initial details, ensured that he was safely escorted off the campus.
Police investigation and arrests
Following the complaint, police started an investigation and checked CCTV footage from the area. Based on the footage and verification, two students were identified: Shahbaz, an MTech student from Ghazipur, and Najeeb, a BTech student from Bareilly.
Both were picked up from Suleman Hall on Sunday, 19th April evening, and later sent to jail after questioning.
SP City Aditya Bansal confirmed the arrests and said the action was taken after proper verification and coordination with the university’s proctorial team. He added that further investigation is underway to track down the remaining suspects involved in the incident.
