Bangladesh: Actress arrested for criticising Muhammad Yunus, ancestral house set on fire

On Thursday (6th February), prominent Bangladeshi actress Meher Afroz Shaon was arrested from the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka for criticising the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

The arrest, carried out by the Detective Branch of the Police, was based on dubious charges of ‘conspiring against the State.’ OpIndia had previously reported about attempts by the Yunus regime to stifle free speech in Bangladesh.

According to reports, a mob also set fire to the ancestral house of Meher Afroz Shaon. The house belonged to Mohammad Ali, the father of the actress.

Ali has previously served as the advisory council member of the Awami League (Jamalpur District). The actress’ mother Tahura Ali had been the MP for Awami League in 1996.

The arson attack on Shaon’s ancestral home was reportedly carried out by a group of ‘students and locals’. They had taken out a procession in Narundi Bazar and later laid siege to the house with bricks and stones.
