Delhi HC asks centre to look into the allegations that Dhurandhar 2 breaches Official Secrets Act by disclosing operational details of armed forces

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to look into the allegations that the movie Dhurandhar: The Revenge breached provisions of the Official Secrets Act, potentially endangering national security. The court asked the govt to take a decision on a PIL filed in this regard.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia disposed of the petition filed by Deepak Kumar, a Head Constable with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), directing the authorities to consider the concerns raised and take an appropriate decision. The PIL alleged that the movies disclose operational details of the armed forces and could pose a threat to security and integrity of the country. The Court, however, did not grant any stay on the film’s shows on theatres and OTT.

The Bench observed that although the movie Dhurandhar: The Revenge is presented as a work of fiction meant for entertainment, the impact of such portrayals cannot be ignored. “Even if the movie is a work of fiction and imagination and is made for entertainment purposes, the impact of the movie can’t be denied,” the Court remarked. It added that the concerns raised by the petitioner, a security force personnel, “can’t be said to be bereft of any material.”

Kumar’s petition claimed that the film explicitly depicts locations, operational tactics, and characters modelled on high-ranking officials and deceased servicemen. He argued that such details could compromise the security and integrity of the country and violate provisions of the Official Secrets Act.

This is not the first time Dhurandhar films have faced legal scrutiny. The original Dhurandhar, released in 2025, drew objections from the family of late Major Mohit Sharma, an Ashoka Chakra awardee. They alleged that the film was inspired by the officer’s life and undercover missions without permission or Army clearance. The High Court had earlier asked the CBFC to consult the Army if needed but did not halt the release.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the sequel, hit theatres on March 19, 2026, and has been a major commercial success. It has been released on Netflix globally, and will be available on JioHotstar in India from next month.
