Delhi put on high alert for Hanuman Jayanti: Security tightened in Uttam Nagar, weeks after lynching of Tarun Kumar by a Muslim mob

The Delhi Police has tightened security in various areas of Delhi as multiple Hindu organisations prepare to take out processions on 2nd April to mark Hanuman Jayanti. Areas like Uttam Nagar and Jahangirpuri have been put under close watch, and police personnel are deployed in large numbers to maintain law and order.

Officials said that surveillance has been increased using CCTV cameras, drones and local intelligence. Barricades have also been placed at strategic locations, and regular flag marches and area domination drills are being carried out so that people feel safe ahead of the festival celebrations. A senior officer said that bike patrols and a large-scale flag march have also been conducted across the northwest district as part of the preparations.

In Jahangirpuri, the police also held a meeting with the Aman Committee to maintain peace in the area, especially keeping in mind the violence that took place during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in 2022, when clashes, stone-pelting, and arson left several people, including police personnel, injured.

Meanwhile, in Uttam Nagar, the security arrangements have been tightened further due to recent tensions in the area. On March 4, a 26-year-old Hindu man named Tarun Kumar was killed by a Muslim mob during Holi celebrations. The situation escalated when a water balloon thrown by an 11-year-old girl from a Hindu family accidentally hit a Muslim woman from the neighbouring house, leading to a clash.

The incident later triggered violence in the area, with a Muslim mob damaging vehicles and setting some on fire. Police had to maintain a strong presence in the locality for nearly a week to control the situation. So far, 16 people, including two minors, have been arrested or taken into custody in connection with the case.

The Police have said that the current security arrangements, covering sensitive spots and major roads, are aimed at keeping the situation under control so that the festival passes peacefully without any problems.
