Donald Trump claims US-Iran deal will be signed today, Iran says no such signing is scheduled

Days after Iran rejected US President Donald Trump’s claims of a deal being finalised between the US and Iran, Trump on Saturday (13th June) said that a deal is scheduled to be signed on Sunday (14th June) between the two countries. He added that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened after the deal is signed.

“The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” Trump posted on Truth Social. In the post, Trump also criticised the earlier US deal with Iran under Obama, saying that it allowed Iran to have nuclear weapons. He said, “My Agreement with Iran is the exact opposite, A WALL TO NO NUCLEAR WEAPON! In fact, they no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement.”

Earlier yesterday, Trump had shared an X post by Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif claiming that the deal was to be finalised in 24 hours. The PM had posted, “With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week.”

However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei had disputed the time of the signing of the deal suggested by Trump and Sharif. “We will have to wait and see about the exact date of the signing of the memorandum of understanding, although it will not be tomorrow,” Baghaei said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also expressed disagreement over the timeline given by Trump for signing the deal, and denied that any signing was planned for Sunday. The IRGC criticised Trump’s “unusual insistence” on that day, and said that a framework “has not yet been finalised.”

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that “we are closer to a peace deal than ever before”. In a post on X, he added, “With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week”.
