Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has asked for the filing of a formal complaint after the use of offensive slogans by leftists against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the campus. A letter has been written by the institution’s Chief Security Officer to the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj (North).
It read, “I have been directed to inform you that on 5th Jan 2026, at approximately 22:00 hours, a programme was organised outside Sabarmati Hostel, Jawaharlal Nehru University, by students associated with the JNUSU (Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union), ostensibly to observe the sixth anniversary of the violence that occurred in JNU on 5th January 2020, under the title A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba.”
The letter added that the event seemed to be restricted to observe the aforementioned anniversary at the beginning with thirty to thirty-five students in attendance, identified as Aditi Mishra, Gopika Babu, Sunil Yadav, Danish Ali, Saad Azmi, Mehboob Ilahi, Kanishk, Pakeeza Khan, Shubham, among other notable names.
It then highlighted, “However, during the course of the programme, subsequent to the judicial verdict on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, the nature and tone of the gathering changed significantly. Certain students began raising highly objectionable, provocative, and inflammatory slogans.”
The development was referred to as “direct contempt” ofthe Supreme Court’s decision. The letter pointed out that such sloganeering “is wholly inconsistent with democratic dissent, violates the JNU Code of Conduct, and has the potential to seriously disturb public order, campus harmony, and the safety and security environment of the university.”
It conveyed that the slogans were “audible, deliberate, and repeated,” showing deliberate and conscious wrongdoing as opposed to any unintentional or spontaneous response. The behaviour demonstrates an explicit disdain for established standards of polite speech, institutional discipline, and the peaceful academic environment of the university campus.
The letter outlined that security department officials were on the scene at the time of the occurrence and maintained an attentive eye. “The security personnel present included Shri Gorkhanath, Inspector (SSS), Shri Vishal Kumar, Supervisor, and Security Guards Shri Jai Kumar Meena and Smt Pooja. I have also been directed to request you to lodge an FIR under the relevant sections of BNS in the above incident,” it informed.
“Modi-Shah, teri kabar khudegi JNU ki dharti par (Modi-Shah, your graves will be dug on JNU soil),” “Ambani-raj ki kabar khudegi JNU ki dharti par (The reign of Ambani will be buried on JNU soil),” and “Adani-raj ki kabar khudegi JNU ki dharti par (The reign of Adani will be buried on JNU soil),” among other slogans, were raised by the left-wing students after the Supreme Court refused bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the wider conspiracy case involving the anti-Hindu Delhi riots.
