Jodhpur witnessed tension on Friday evening, 27th March, after some people from the Muslim community pelted stones at Hindu women participating in a Gangaur procession. The incident took place in the Makarana locality of Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district during the ‘Phagad Ghudla’ fair, where celebrations suddenly gave way to chaos after stone-pelting was reported.
According to the media reports, the Gangaur procession was moving through the area in the evening, with several devotees participating, including women and families. The procession also had three tractors as part of the celebrations. At this point, three muslim men, in an inebriated state, tried to force their way into the procession on a motorcycle. When people in the procession objected and tried to stop them, an argument broke out. Residents claimed that the Muslims then rammed their motorcycle into one of the tractors, which further escalated the situation.

Local councillors and residents said that stones were thrown in a planned manner from the top of a nearby building, which they claim is illegal. They have also demanded action against an illegal taxi stand operating in the area.
Police bring situation under control
Police officials said that the situation was brought under control after nearly four hours of effort. Heavy police deployment was made in the area to manage the crowd and prevent further escalation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Manish Choudhary, who reached the spot, said the situation is now stable. “We received information about stone-pelting during the Gangaur procession and immediately deployed a heavy police force,” he said.
He added that some suspects have been detained and are being questioned. “Based on the complaint of the affected party, the process of registering an FIR has been initiated,” he said.
Senior officials, including IPS officer Prateek Singh and other police personnel, were present at the spot. Police had to persuade and calm down the crowd for nearly an hour before detaining four accused, after which the situation gradually stabilised.
