Maha Kumbh stampede: CM Yogi monitoring for 48 hours, ensuring smooth movement for pilgrims in co-ordination with Railways, DMs and police officials

Early on the night of 29 January, a stampede-like situation emerged in Maha Kumbh near the Sangam area, causing the death of 30 people and injuring dozens as people tried to break barricades and rush for Snan. CM Yogi Adityanath has termed the incident a ‘lesson’ for the administration and law enforcement and have been constantly monitoring the situation.

As per reports, CM Yogi has spoken with Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the arrangements of railway stations to handle the large footfalls and smooth running to trains to and from Prayagraj. He has been in talks with DMs and police officers of multiple districts and has been instructing them on personnel movement and arrangements.

Massive traffic jams and long queues have been reported on roads leading to Prayagraj. The CM has instructed officials of the respective districts to ensure that the pilgrims encounter no difficulties on the routes to Prayagraj and discipline is maintained.

Yesterday, acknowledging the loss of life and injuries of pilgrims, CM Yogi announced Rs 25 lakhs ex gratia compensation for the kin of victims who had died in the stampede. A judicial probe has also been ordered into the incident.
