Maha Kumbh stampede: UP govt confirms 30 deaths, 60 others hospitalised

Hours after uncontrollable surge of devotees touched off a massive stampede during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, the Uttar Pradesh government has confirmed a tragic loss of at least 30 lives.

25 out of the 30 victims have been identified while 60 others are injured and hospitalised. According to authorities, stampede-like situation erupted after barricades broke due to a crowd surge.

In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, a stampede situation occurred near the Sangam during the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025. People had gathered in large numbers due to the occasion of Mauni Amavasya on 29 January.

As per reports, while a large number of people were moving towards Sangam ghat, at around 1.30 am in the night, a sudden stampede like situation erupted and people started running over fallen persons, tragically causing deaths and injuries.
