The first such incident was reported on 13th June, when an injured young man was found tied to a post with a cardboard sign accusing him of being a “ratero” (thief). Similar cases emerged on 17th June and 19th June. In images appearing on social media, the men are seen with their mouths taped, faces marked and warning signs placed near them. As per local media reports, motorcycles involved in some of the alleged thefts were also found at some of the scenes.
Jalisco prosecutor Salvador González de los Santos confirmed the incidents to local media. He said that young men were found tied with tape to poles with signs warning that consequences would happen if people continued stealing motorcycles. He said investigators were looking into the allegations against the people found tied, but added that they are being treated as victims at this stage.
While the police are probing the incidents, trying to reach the individual or individuals behind them, the ‘Batman of Lagos de Moreno’ has become a popular figure on social media.
