‘Muslims will only follow Sharia’: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind opposes implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand

The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand from Monday (January 27, 2025) has sparked significant dissatisfaction among Muslim organizations. Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has issued a statement opposing the UCC in Uttarakhand, stating that the Uniform Civil Code is unacceptable to Muslims under any circumstances.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani has described the UCC enforced in Uttarakhand as a violation of the constitutional right to religious freedom and likened it to an assault on democracy.

Maulana Madani stated that implementing this law while ignoring the objections of concerned parties, especially Muslim minorities, is unjust. Public feedback collected by the Law Commission of India previously revealed that the majority of the country’s population does not support the UCC. Consequently, the commission had advised the government that the UCC was neither desirable nor necessary. Despite these recommendations and public sentiments, the government imposed the law in a dictatorial manner, disregarding democratic principles, Maulana Madani said.

He further emphasized that they had repeatedly presented to the government that the nation’s Constitution and its framers had promised to protect personal laws. If the government reneges on this promise, it will fight against it within the bounds of the law and Constitution.

Supporting Islamic Sharia, he reiterated that Muslims remain steadfast in adhering to Sharia law and will not be deterred by any legislation that challenges it.
