Not new, procedure in place since 2019, have asked US not to mistreat deportees: EAM Dr S Jaishankar on deportation row

Deportation of illegal Indians living in the United States of America has ignited a political storm with the opposition trying to target incumbent Modi government for these deportations of illegals from the US. Now, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has responded to the outrage in the Parliament during the ongoing budget session.

S. Jaishankar said in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, February 6, that the government is in discussions with the US to ensure deported Indians are treated fairly. He further emphasised the need for a strong crackdown on the illegal migration industry operating in India.

The Indian Foreign Minister further said that this is not a new development of deporting illegal Indian immigrants and the policy has been in place since 2009. Incidentally, Congress, which is making a hue and cry about the development, was in power in 2009.

“It is the obligation of all countries to take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad. This is naturally subject to an unambiguous verification of their nationality. This is not a policy applicable to any specific country, nor is it one practised only by India. It is a generally accepted principle in international relations. Members would be aware that the process of deportation is not new and has been ongoing for several years,” the EAM added.
