Samajwadi Party attacks the Thakur community over a dispute on DJ song in Aligarh: Read how caste-based hostility was fuelled to target the UP govt

Tension broke out on Tuesday night, 24th February, in the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh as a result of a dispute in a wedding procession, which led to stone pelting between two groups. The incident occurred in the Sunana village around 9:15 at night, which falls under the Jawa police station area, as a wedding procession of the Jatav community had arrived.

Dispute over DJ song sparks clash

According to media reports, the dispute arose when a song played by a DJ at a wedding of Jatav community contained caste-related words. People from the Thakur community protested against the song, saying it was provocative. The dispute, which began as an argument, escalated into stone pelting. Panic gripped people who had gathered for the wedding, and the atmosphere turned tense in no time.

The police were informed about the situation late at night. As soon as they received the call, the police team from the local police station rushed to the spot. Senior officers, including the Circle Officer and additional forces from nearby police stations, were also deployed to control the situation. By the time the police reached the spot, tempers had already risen, but the police were able to separate the two groups and control the situation.

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries in the incident. After the intervention of the police, the wedding procession reached its destination safely. The authorities have stated that the people who attempted to disrupt public order are being identified, and legal action will be taken against them. As a precautionary measure, police personnel have been deployed in the village to ensure that the situation is calm. 

Police clarification on social media

Aligarh Police shared a explaination video on X in which SP City Mrigank Shekhar Pathak rejected the claims of organised caste violence. In its statement, the police said that on Tuesday, 24th February, they received information about a dispute over a song being played during a wedding procession in Sunana village. Police teams immediately reached the spot, controlled the situation, and ensured that the procession continued peacefully.

Aligarh Police also stated that the During the initial investigation, it came to light that a person in the wedding procession had played a song on the DJ system from his mobile phone. The song had caste-based derogatory words and was played to insult others. The residents were offended by the song and tried to stop it, and this led to the dispute. The police clarified that the situation was dealt with immediately, and peace was restored.

Political row over the incident

However, the incident soon took a political turn and the opposition is trying to create casteist tension in the area. On Wednesday, 25th February, the Samajwadi Party’s media cell posted a video on X, saying that “the terror of Thakurs has increased under the BJP government” and claiming that members of the Thakur community had pelted stones at a Jatav wedding procession. The post further accused the BJP government of allowing caste-based hostility to grow in the state.

Officials added that anyone found trying to disturb communal harmony or spread misinformation for personal or political reasons would face strict legal action.
