Tamil Nadu hung verdict drama: Governor sends TVK Chief Joseph Vijay back again after he fails to prove majority; actor seeks support from the Left

After emerging as the single largest party after the assembly poll results in Tamil Nadu, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is now struggling to form a government in the state. The TVK fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats, securing 108 seats.

TVK Chief Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay on Thursday (7th May) met the Tamil Nadu governor Vishwanath Arlekar for the second time at the Lok Bhavan. During the discussion with Vijay, which lasted about 30 minutes, the governor again asked him to prove the majority by showing the signatures of 118 MLAs. “During the meeting, the Hon’ble Governor explained that the requisite majority support in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, essential for forming the Government, has not been established,” the Lok Bhavan said in a statement.

Vijay had earlier met the governor on Wednesday and presented the list of the Party MLAs and also the support letter from Congress, after the party extended support to his party, breaking its long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). However, TVK was still short of the majority mark needed for forming the government. The TVK has 108 seats, out of which Joseph Vijay won on the two seats of Tiruchirapalli and Perambur. He will have to resign from one of the seats, and in all likelihood, one of his MLAs would be elected as the Speaker, who would only be able to vote during a tie. Thus, even after a coalition with the Congress party, the total number of seats would be 111, 7 seats short of the majority mark.

The TVK has reached out to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) for support. However, the party has clearly stated that it will not seek support from the NDA parties.

VCK leader Thirumavalavan said that his Party would decide on supporting Vijay after the legislative party meeting today. VCK has two MLAs in the state.

There were speculations that MK Stalin’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had also explored the possibility of allying with the TVK. However, following a meeting of legislators and functionaries chaired by party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, AIADMK senior leader K.P. Munusamy denied all reports claiming that the party would support the TVK as untrue.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Thursday criticised Governor Rajendra Arlekar and accused him of preventing the TVK from forming the government in the state. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K Selvaperunthagai called for massive protest demonstrations across district headquarters in Tamil Nadu on Friday (8th May). He alleged that the BJP-led Union Government and the Governor were acting against the Constitution by attempting to prevent Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
