Three government school teachers in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district have been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 13-year-old student.
According to officials, the girl had been absent from school for a month, prompting school authorities to visit her home. It was during this visit that the abuse came to light, leading the child welfare committee to intervene.
Following a conversation with the survivor, the committee filed a police complaint, resulting in the teachers’ arrest. The incident sparked protests outside the school, with demonstrators raising slogans. The education department has since suspended the three accused teachers.
This case comes from the same district where, last year, a girl was sexually assaulted at a fake National Cadet Corps (NCC) camp, and over a dozen girls faced similar abuse.
Notably, the sexual abuse of the girl comes weeks after the Anna University sexual assault that had shaken the conscience of the state. On December 23, there was a report of an incident of sexual assault at Anna University in Tamil Nadu. Two individuals, reportedly outsiders, had assaulted a woman and her boyfriend. They had forced the woman to undress and filmed her without her consent. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the Kotturpuram police.
In the wake of repeated incidents of crime against women in the state, the BJP has trained guns on the ruling DMK government, criticising it for crumbling law and order and failing to ensure safety of women.
