A 13-year-old Class VIII student died after spending several days in hospital following an assault by a teacher and a fellow student at her school in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district. The incident, which took place during a science examination on August 20, has triggered a police investigation and departmental action against school authorities.
The girl, identified as Kshama, was a student at Composite School in Sahuwapur, under the Bharkhani development block.
According to a complaint filed by Kshama’s father, she had gone to school on August 20 to sit for her science examination. During the exam, she got into a confrontation with a classmate and was assaulted by the fellow student.
The complaint states that Kshama subsequently approached her teacher to report what had happened. Instead of intervening, the teacher assaulted the girl and twisted both her arms, resulting in fractures and serious nerve injuries.
The incident came to the family’s attention after Kshama’s younger sister informed them. Her relatives rushed to the school and confronted the teacher.
The family further alleged that they approached the school headmaster seeking action, but no immediate intervention was taken. They claimed they were instead advised to take the injured girl for medical treatment.
Kshama was subsequently admitted to hospital and remained under treatment for several days. Her father said she died at around 4 pm on August 30 at a private hospital in Farrukhabad.
Following a written complaint submitted by her father on August 31, police registered an FIR under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Police officials said the case names the school headmaster, the teacher and the teenage student allegedly involved in the altercation. The teacher has been arrested, while further investigation is underway.
Hardoi Superintendent of Police Ashok Meena said investigators were examining Kshama’s medical records and recording statements from witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the individual roles of those named in the complaint.
Hardoi Additional Superintendent of Police Subodh Gautam also confirmed that a case had been registered and that the investigation was in progress.
The education department has meanwhile initiated departmental action. Basic Education Officer Prabhat Mishra said officials had received a video purportedly showing the teacher assaulting Kshama at the school.
“An inquiry found that the teacher had beaten the student on August 20,” Mishra said.
The headmaster and the teacher have both been suspended pending departmental proceedings, according to the education department.
The investigation will now focus on what exactly transpired inside the classroom, the extent of injuries suffered by Kshama, the circumstances surrounding her death and whether the school authorities took appropriate action after being informed about the alleged assault.
Police are also examining the medical evidence and witness accounts to determine whether the alleged assault was directly responsible for the teenager’s death and to establish the liability, if any, of each accused.
The Hardoi case comes amid another disturbing incident involving a schoolchild in Andhra Pradesh. In Visakhapatnam, six-year-old UKG student Pranay Teja died after collapsing at Little Garden School in the One Town area. His family alleged that a teacher beat him with a stick over incomplete homework. The child was rushed to King George Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Taken together, the two incidents have raised fresh questions about the use of physical punishment in schools and the safeguards in place to protect children from violence inside educational institutions. In both cases, authorities are examining medical evidence, witness statements and other available evidence to determine what happened and fix responsibility.
