In a heist that has left Bengaluru’s law enforcement on high alert, a group of unidentified men posing as central government officials intercepted a cash van and escaped with an estimated Rs 7 crore on Wednesday. The brazen robbery took place in broad daylight near the iconic Ashoka Pillar, sending shockwaves through the usually bustling JP Nagar area.
According to police sources, the cash vehicle was en route from a bank branch when a car bearing a ‘Government of India’ sticker pulled up alongside it. The occupants, whose identities remain unknown, allegedly claimed they were conducting an official document verification. Trusting the purported authority, the cash van crew complied, only to be overpowered moments later.
The suspects forcibly ushered the van staff into their own car along with the cash boxes. They then drove towards Dairy Circle, where the staff members were abandoned before the gang sped away with the money. By the time the shaken employees alerted their superiors, the criminals had vanished without leaving a trace.
Senior police officials said that multiple teams have been deployed to track down the culprits. CCTV footage from JP Nagar to Dairy Circle is being scanned to reconstruct the escape route and identify the getaway vehicle.
“Surveillance has been intensified across the city. Nakabandi has been enforced at all major junctions, and specialised teams are on the ground. We are confident of apprehending the suspects soon,” a senior officer stated.
The sophisticated impersonation and swift execution have raised concerns about an organised gang operating with meticulous planning. Police investigations are underway, and authorities are urging citizens to report any suspicious activity related to government insignia misuse.
