Zero cases of poaching: Not a single rhino was poached in 2025, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma posts about state’s success in conservation

2025 has been a remarkable year for Assam’s wildlife conservation efforts. CM Sharma took to X to share that not a single rhino was poached in the state in the year. The remarkable feat has been achieved by the collective efforts of the government, volunteers, forest officials and local communities who help with the conservation.

“Zero rhinos poached in 2025. You heard it right, ZERO rhinos have been poached in Assam in 2025, continuing our excellent conservation efforts and maintaining our streak of protecting Assam’s pride”, Sarma posted.

Assam had reported zero cases of rhino poaching in the year 2023 too.

Assam’s Kaziranga National Park is home to nearly 80% population of the greater one-horned rhino. The rhinos were once heavily poached for their horns, but consistent efforts, and strong measures, including shoot at sight orders for poachers, have drastically reduced poaching cases.

Kaziranga had just 12 rhinos in 1908. Sport hunting, poaching, and the destruction of habitat had almost driven the rhinos to extinction. With a global call for conservation, decades of conservation efforts saw the rhino populations bounce back. Assam now has around 4000 rhinos, with 3000 just in Kaziranga National Park.
