A fresh wave of strikes hit Tehran on Saturday, 7th March, with Mehrabad International Airport coming under attack as Israel expanded its military operations against Iran. Soon after the strikes, a massive fire broke out at the airport in western Tehran.
Videos shared on social media showed a plane burning on the runway and thick black smoke rising into the sky from the airport, which is one of Iran’s busiest aviation hubs.
The Israeli military said it had launched a “broad-scale new wave of strikes” targeting regime-linked locations in the Iranian capital. It was not immediately clear which specific sections of the airport were damaged in the latest attack.
Mehrabad airport had already been targeted earlier this week. On 4th March, Israel said it struck the airport to destroy defence and detection systems that it believed posed a risk to Israeli Air Force operations.
The latest developments come as the conflict in West Asia continues to intensify. The crisis escalated after the United States and Israel carried out major strikes on Iran on 28th February. The operation was named “Epic Fury” by the US and “Lion’s Roar” by Israel. The attacks killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with several senior Iranian officials.
Iran confirmed Khamenei’s death on the 1st of March and promised strong retaliation, warning that American military bases across the region would be treated as US territory. Since then, Iran has launched attacks on Israel and on US bases in several countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
