A tragic incident during Holi celebrations in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Wednesday, 4th March, a 26-year-old man named Tarun Kumar was beaten to death following a dispute sparked by an accidental splash of coloured water from a balloon.
The violence erupted in the JJ Colony area of southwest Delhi during the festival. According to police and family accounts, an 11-year-old girl from Tarun’s family was playing Holi on her terrace and threw a water balloon, aiming at her father below. The balloon fell on the road and splashed water on a woman from a neighbouring Muslim family, leading to an argument between the two households.
The matter was resolved at first after the Hindu family apologised, but tensions escalated later that evening. When Tarun was returning home on his bike after celebrating Holi with a friend, he stopped by a group of 40-50 people belonging to the Muslim community. He was brutally assaulted with iron rods, bricks, stones, and other objects.
Grandmother recounts horror
Speaking to OpIndia, the grandmother of the deceased described the trauma her family is currently going through.
“I have a grandson. He is lying in the hospital. I have three sons. Three of my sons have suffered head injuries. My daughter-in-law is in the hospital. I am not in my senses,” she said.
When asked about the incident, she narrated how the dispute began over the balloon.
“My elder brother-in-law’s granddaughter threw a balloon into the neighbour’s house. When the neighbour’s daughter started arguing, I folded my hands and apologised, saying it was a mistake. But later they killed my grandson. My grandson had just come back from the gym. They beat him. My grandson came from the gym. They killed him,” she said.
Neighbour says the attack was planned
A neighbour of Tarun Kumar also described the sequence of events and claimed that the incident began over a minor misunderstanding.
“It was nothing. It was just a small balloon. The balloon did not even touch the woman. It hit the ground, and only a splash of water touched her. She was around 45 years old,” the neighbour said.
“She abused the family. The family said it was a mistake and asked her to forgive the children. But they did not listen. Instead, they called their people,” the neighbour further said.
The neighbour added that a large group gathered soon afterwards.
“At least 40 to 50 people came. They beat everyone in the house, including Tarun’s father, his uncle and even his mother. They entered the house and broke things. They tore his mother’s clothes and even her blouse. She was lying unconscious. They destroyed everything,” the neighbour claimed.
According to the neighbour, the attackers waited for Tarun to return home.
“They planned to kill Tarun. He had come home late and was not present earlier, so he did not know anything about the incident. Later, when Tarun arrived, he had not even parked his bike when they started beating him,” the neighbour said.
“Everyone started beating him, men, women and even girls. Whoever had whatever in their hands started attacking him. They kept beating him until he died,” the neighbour added.
“They locked neighbouring houses so that no one could come out to save him,” the neighbour said, while also claiming that the police arrived late despite the station being nearby.
The grieving grandmother said the family is now seeking justice.
“Do justice. Do justice. My grandson and my daughter-in-law are also sick in the hospital. And my third son’s back is being bandaged,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police registered a case and initially arrested four adults, and a juvenile was also apprehended in connection with the incident. Following Tarun’s death, murder charges under Section 103 have been added to the FIR. Authorities said that the clash was triggered by the balloon incident between members of two families from different communities.
