13-years of suffering to come to an end: Harish Rana shifted to AIIMS Delhi for passive euthanasia

Harish Rana, the 32-year-old man who has been in a vegetative state for 13 years, was shifted to AIIMS, Delhi, on Saturday morning (March 14, 2026). Rana became the first person to have received the Supreme Court’s permission to be administered passive euthanasia. As per the Supreme Court order, Rana will be shifted to the palliative care department of AIIMS Delhi, where the doctors will remove his life support to put an end to his suffering in a dignified manner.

Rana’s family, who live on the 13th-floor flat of Empire Society in Rajnagar Extension, Ghaziabad, braced themselves for the painful farewell they were compelled to give to their son. As his father, Ashok Rana, accompanied him, along with the medical team, he expressed how painful it was for the family to make the decision. “We have spent 4,588 days with this pain, but the decision to end our son’s suffering is even more painful,” Rana said.

A day before, on March 13, 2026, spiritual leader Sister Kumari Lovely Didi from Prabhu Milan Bhavan, a Brahma Kumaris centre in Mohan Nagar, Sahibabad, visited Rana’s residence to bid him a peaceful farewell. She applied sandalwood tilak on his forehead and offered prayers.

In a video of the moment, Kumari Lovely Didi can be seen speaking to Rana. She tells him to forgive everyone and seek forgiveness before leaving. “Forgive everyone, apologise to everyone, and leave. It’s okay,” she uttered to him.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (11th March) upheld Rana’s right to die with dignity by allowing him passive euthanasia.

Rana has been in an irreversible permanent vegetative state since 2013 after falling off the fourth floor of a paying guest accommodation. Rana, a student of Punjab University, suffered serious brain injuries and was put on life support. He has been confined to a bed and is surviving on Clinically Assisted Nutrition (CAN), with a tracheostomy tube for respiration and a gastrojejunostomy tube for feeding. He has been in a vegetative state with 100 per cent disability and quadriplegia, requiring continuous medical assistance for breathing, feeding and daily care.

After evaluating his health condition, considering the opinion of medical experts, and keeping in mind his parents’ suffering, the Supreme Court decided that he should be allowed passive euthanasia. The Court directed the medical team to ensure that Rana’s life support is withdrawn in a dignified manner.
