While the US forces are engaged against Iran in Operation Epic Fury in West Asia, back on US soil, a major security incident has exposed the vulnerability of a critical air force base. As per reports, multiple waves of ‘advanced unauthorised drones’ repeatedly penetrated the restricted airspace of Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana between March 9 and 15, 2026.
The Barksdale Air Force Base is home to the B-52H Stratofortress nuclear bombers and a key base for the US Air Force’s Global Strike Command.
ABC News and NY Post have reported that during the above-mentioned period, personnel at the base observed swarms of 12-15 drones operating over sensitive areas, including the flight line of the bombers. The drones reportedly exhibited non-commercial signal characteristics, long-range control links, and notable resistance to electronic jamming.
The B-52H nuclear bombers were placed under shelter-in-place orders to protect them. Also, the flight lines were temporarily shut down to prevent any mishap.
Former Deputy Under Secretary of Defence Stephen Bryen highlighted that the drones appeared autonomous with sophisticated sensors, suggesting well-trained operators and added that there is a possibility the drones were smuggled in parts and assembled later.
The drone incursion also likely caused in some delay in the Operation Epic Fury. “Lights on the drones suggested the operators might be testing security responses. ..After reaching multiple points across the installation, the drones dispersed across sensitive locations on the base. The drones came in waves and entered and exited the base in a way that may suggest attempts to avoid the operators being located”, ABC has quoted, citing a confidential briefing document they have accessed.
The incident has sent alarm bells ringing within Air Force and federal authorities. Barksdale Air Force Base has publicly confirmed an ongoing investigation on the issue. The incident has triggered major concerns regarding US domestic vulnerabilities to probing and reconnaissance by foreign adversaries, especially nations the US is currently in conflict.
In May 2025, Ukraine carried out the sophisticated Operation Spiderweb, deep within Russia, smuggling drones in trucks covertly for months in advance and attacking Russian air force assets at multiple locations remotely. The incident was observed with awe and concern by the whole world because it displayed how drones have changed modern warfare, and just how far they can go to eliminate enemy targets.
Multiple B-52 bombers are currently deployed in Operation Epic Fury. The bombers have also been using the UK RAF’s Fairford base to launch attacks on Iran.
