A chilling incident took place on Mumbai’s Mira Road in the early hours of Sunday when a man stabbed two security guards with a knife after they failed to recite Kalma (an Islamic prayer). The accused has been identified as 31-year-old Jaib Zubair Ansari and has been arrested by the police. Preliminary investigation into the case has revealed that Ansari, a US returnee, used to watch ISIS propaganda videos.
As per reports, the incident happened around 4 am on Sunday when the victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, were on duty at an under-construction building. Ansari approached the guards and asked their names and religion, which they answered. Then, he asked them whether they could recite the Kalma, to which they replied negatively. In no time, Ansari pulled out a knife and attacked the guards.
Rajkumar Mishra sustained injuries in the attack, including damage to his intestines, while Subroto Sen received minor injuries to his back. After the attack, Sen hid inside a security cabin and alerted the police. Ansari had fled by the time police arrived at the spot. Both security guards were taken to Wockhardt Hospital for treatment and are in a stable condition.
The police examined the CCTV footage of the area and identified Ansari. He was found in his rented residence in the Naya Nagar area in Mira Road East and arrested within 90 minutes of the incident. An FIR was lodged at the Naya Nagar Police Station under Sections 109, 118(2), and 196(1) of the BNS, based on Sen’s complaint.

Ansari reportedly went to the US in 2000 for studies and returned to India in 2019. Ever since, he has been living alone in a rented accommodation on Mira Road. His landlord had asked him to vacate the flat by 5th May. A few months ago, Ansari taught chemistry and mathematics to students at a coaching centre.
A joint team of the Naya Nagar police Police and the Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) is investigating the possibility of a terror angle in the case. The Maharashtra ATS joined the probe after preliminary findings suggested that the Ansari may have been radicalised.
