BJP govt led by Himanta Biswa Sarma introduces Uniform Civil Code bill in Assam Vidhan Sabha: Here is what we know

On 25th May (Monday), the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in Assam tabled the much-awaited Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Legislative Assembly. The introduction was made following a cabinet meeting of the chief minister’s second term.

The government informed that the objective of the proposed legislation is to establish a uniform legal framework for civil matters, including the minimum marriage age, outlawing polygamy, rights related to inheritance and property and mandatory marriage registration. Furthermore, some provisions regarding live-in relationships have also been suggested.

A special session of the state’s Legislative Assembly is set to take place from 21st to 26th May. During this time, the newly elected legislators will take oath. The cabinet had recently given its approval to the draft of the bill during its inaugural meeting. According to other reports, the bill was expected to be presented on the last day of the ongoing session.

Sarma has explained that the bill would not apply to religious practices. He indicated that the government does not plan to regulate Namaz, Puja, religious rituals or any religious traditions or customs which have been completely exempted from the purview of the bill. The government asserted that it has been tailored to consider the social and cultural diversity of Assam.

The regulation will likewise not be imposed on the tribal communities residing in the state’s plain and hill regions. Now, Assam is going to become the third state to introduce the bill after other Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states, Gujarat and Uttarakhand.
