On Saturday, 29th August, Kolkata Police has registered a suo motu FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for violating an order of the Calcutta High Court during a Trinamool Congress students’ wing programme in Kolkata.
The FIR was registered at Hastings Police Station against Banerjee and the organisers of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day event, according to PTI. The case has been filed under Sections 61(2), 223, 125(a), 132 and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Calcutta High Court had allowed the TMCP foundation day programme to be held on Friday, 28th August at Cathedral Road. However, the court had directed the organisers to keep one side of the road open for traffic.

According to police, the condition imposed by the High Court was not followed during the programme. Police also revealed that the event continued beyond the time limit fixed by the court.
A police officer said, “The FIR has been registered for the alleged violation of the court’s order. The role of all those involved in the violation will be examined during the course of the investigation.”
The police complaint further said that some TMC supporters pushed aside barricades and got into scuffles with police personnel. The supporters also disrupted traffic on Cathedral Road, while the programme continued beyond the time permitted by the court.
