China backs Pakistan on Kashmir, calls for “resolution” under UNSC framework in joint statement

China and Pakistan, in their joint statement issued on May 26, reiterated their positions on regional issues including Jammu and Kashmir, with Beijing again describing the dispute as a historical issue that should be addressed through peaceful means in accordance with international frameworks.

According to the joint statement, Pakistan briefed the Chinese side on the “latest developments” in Jammu and Kashmir. The statement noted that China reiterated its view that the Jammu and Kashmir issue is “left over from history” and should be “properly and peacefully resolved in accordance with the U.N. Charter, relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements.”

The reference is significant as it reflects Beijing’s continued support for Pakistan’s position on Kashmir in bilateral diplomatic engagements. The statement also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in South Asia and resolving outstanding disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

Beyond Kashmir, the two countries highlighted expanding strategic cooperation in areas such as counter-terrorism, international governance, artificial intelligence and regional security. The statement further mentioned cooperation on trans-boundary water resources under the principles of equality and mutual benefit.

India, however, has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India and has repeatedly rejected any external role in matters concerning the region. New Delhi has also maintained that issues related to Jammu and Kashmir are to be addressed bilaterally and regards constitutional and administrative decisions concerning the Union Territory as India’s internal affairs.
