The deadline for foreign nationals to register for their stay in the country has been altered by the Union Home Ministry under the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025. The prior regulation, which mandated registration “within fourteen days after the expiry of one hundred and eighty days of arrival in India,” would be replaced by the new provision which was announced on 1st June (Monday).
Foreign visitors to India with a 180-day or shorter visa must now register “any time before the expiry of the said period of 180 days” in the event that the trip transcends the visa period. The notification mentioned that foreign nationals having a more than 180-day visa that stipulates that “each stay shall not exceed 180 days” must register “any time before the expiry of 180 days” if they want to stay in India for more than that amount of time on any one occasion or over the course of a calendar year. Such registration will only be allowed in extreme situations.
“The Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025 (hereinafter referred to as the said rules), in rule 12, (a) in sub-rule (1), (i) in the third proviso, for the words ‘within fourteen days after the expiry of one hundred and eighty days of his arrival in India,’ the words ‘any time before the expiry of the said period of one hundred and eighty days’ shall be substituted,” it read.
Relaxations have also been implemented in specific instances involving children born to parents who are either or both foreigners. In the past, parents needed to use the specified online portal or mobile application to electronically inform the registration officer within 30 days after the child’s birth to receive visa services, such as new visa grants and exit authorisation.
The latest clause stated that this sub-rule will not be applicable if one of the parents is an Indian citizen and wants to keep the child’s Indian citizenship. However, it clarified that if the child later becomes a citizen of a foreign nation while still in India, either parent must notify the registration officer of the situation within thirty days of the development.
Additionally, the notification amended the rules pertaining to administrative procedures and reporting requirements for all hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities that offer lodging, medical care, or sleeping accommodations on their property.
