As Delhi continues to face severe heatwave conditions, the Delhi Government has intensified its relief measures across the city, reaching more than 4.7 lakh people in all 13 districts. Through mobile relief vans, public assistance camps, temporary cooling shelters, and on-ground teams, the administration has been providing support to people most affected by the extreme summer heat.
On 2nd June, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the heatwave response campaign has been running continuously since 6th of May and is being carried out on a war footing. According to official figures, a total of 4,70,089 people have received assistance under the campaign so far.
Water, ORS and protective items were distributed
To help residents cope with the scorching temperatures, government teams have distributed large quantities of essential relief materials across the city. These include 1,84,021 litres of drinking water, 2,43,945 ORS packets, 67,431 gamchas, and 49,434 caps.
The relief materials have been provided to daily wage workers, commuters, people living in vulnerable conditions, and others exposed to long hours outdoors during the heatwave.
North-East Delhi records the highest number of beneficiaries
Among all districts, North-East Delhi reported the highest number of beneficiaries, with 83,703 people receiving support. East Delhi followed with 66,964 beneficiaries, while the New Delhi district recorded 41,667 beneficiaries.
Relief assistance also reached 41,600 people in the Central North district, 39,875 in West Delhi, and 37,870 in South Delhi. The campaign further covered South-West Delhi, South-East Delhi, Central district, Outer North, Old Delhi, North-West Delhi, and North Delhi.
District-wise distribution highlights
Government data showed that the New Delhi district distributed the largest quantity of drinking water, with 32,974.3 litres supplied during the campaign. The Central North district recorded the highest distribution of ORS packets at 71,625.
Meanwhile, South Delhi led in the distribution of protective items, handing out 7,860 gamchas and 5,240 caps to help people protect themselves from the harsh sun.
Cooling shelters set up at busy public locations
Apart from mobile relief units, the Delhi Government has also established temporary cooling shelters and shaded waiting areas at several high-footfall locations, including metro stations, bus terminals, and busy public spaces.
Shelters have been set up at places such as Nangloi, Rohini, and Peeragarhi, providing immediate relief to commuters, workers, and others spending long hours outdoors.
In the Central district alone, 5,475 people used these shelters, where officials distributed 2,100 litres of water and 375 ORS packets. Shelter-based services also benefited 920 people in West Delhi, 900 people in South Delhi, and 120 people in North-East Delhi.
Government urges people to take precautions
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta appealed to residents to avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours unless necessary. She also advised people to stay hydrated and consume ORS regularly to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The Delhi Government said its focus remains on ensuring that no resident is left without assistance as the capital continues to experience intense heatwave conditions.
