Pro-Khalistan slogans raised, Bhindranwale posters displayed at Golden Temple on 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star

Pro-Khalistan slogans were raised, and posters of Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale were displayed at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) on Saturday (6th June) on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star. The day also marks the death ceremony of Bhindranwale, who was killed in the operation in 1984.

As per reports, supporters of Khalistani terrorist Bhindranwale gathered in the premises of the Golden Temple with his posters and raised slogans.

Every year on the 6th June, a special ardas (prayer) is held commemorating Bhinderanwale and others who were killed during Operation Blue Star.

To prevent any untoward situation, a comprehensive security grid has been set up across Amritsar and the surrounding areas to maintain security and law and order. Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha visited Amritsar to review security preparations and troop deployment ahead of the anniversary.

Sinha said that a comprehensive security grid has been established across Punjab, with a special focus on Amritsar and its surrounding regions, to prevent any law-and-order situation. Around 4,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around Amritsar, 2000 of whom are personnel and 30 gazetted officers brought in from outside the district.

What is Operation Blue Star?

Operation Blue Star was a major operation conducted by the Indian military between June 1 and June 10, 1984, on the orders of the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The operation was aimed at eliminating Khalistani terrorist Bhindrawale and his armed followers from the premises of the Golden Temple, where they were hiding. On June 6, 1984, the Indian Army entered the Golden Temple and neutralised Bhindralwale, head of the radical Sikh organisation Damdami Taksal.

Months later, in October 1984, two Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, assassinated the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at her New Delhi residence to avenge the operation.
