Bihar: FIR filed against SDPO, SHO, and other police personnel over the encounter killing of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari in Bhojpur

The death of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari in a police encounter in Bihar’s Bhojpur district has taken a new turn after an FIR was registered against several police officers. The case was filed at Shahpur Police Station following a complaint submitted by Tiwari’s mother.

According to officials, the FIR names the then Jagdishpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), the then Shahpur Station House Officer (SHO), and other police personnel who were involved in the operation. The case, registered as Shahpur Police Station Case No. 178/26 on 22nd June, is currently being investigated.

Tiwari, a resident of Bilauti village under the Shahpur police station limits, was killed during an encounter on 17th June. The incident sparked strong reactions and led to questions about the police action. Amid the growing controversy, the Bihar government ordered a judicial inquiry into the encounter on Saturday.

The family of the deceased has continued to seek support for their demand for justice. On Monday, Tiwari’s relatives met Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor in Patna and requested him to stand with them. They also invited him to attend a panchayat meeting scheduled for 24th June to discuss the incident. In a statement, the party said Kishor assured the family of his support.

Soon after the encounter, police had stated that Tiwari was mentally unsound. However, his family members and many residents strongly disagreed with that description. They said he was a public activist who frequently raised issues affecting local people and brought them to the attention of authorities.

Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media appears to show Tiwari throwing away his weapon before the encounter. The authenticity of the video has not been independently confirmed. Earlier, police had maintained that Tiwari opened fire multiple times on police personnel, forcing them to retaliate in self-defence. They said he suffered bullet injuries to his leg during the exchange of fire.
