Following the devastating fire in Lucknow that killed 15 people, the Delhi government has launched a special inspection drive covering hundreds of coaching centres across the national capital. The move comes on Wednesday, 24th June, amid growing concerns over student safety and compliance with fire safety regulations in educational institutions.
The fire broke out in a building in Lucknow on Monday, 22nd June, that housed an animation training centre along with other establishments. Most of those who lost their lives were students, prompting authorities in Delhi to review safety arrangements at coaching institutes across the city.

Officials said inspection teams will check whether coaching institutes are following mandatory fire safety rules, building regulations and other safety requirements. The aim is to identify any violations that could put students at risk.
According to an official statement, the MCD has already surveyed 923 coaching centres across Delhi and will share the details with all concerned agencies to ensure coordinated action during the inspection process.
Action against violators
The minister also instructed the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and other departments to take strict action against coaching institutes found violating safety norms or operating in violation of existing regulations.
The MCD has been asked to submit daily reports to the minister’s office detailing the action taken and the compliance status of coaching centres. The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting attended by officials from the Home Department, Urban Development Department, MCD, Delhi Fire Service, DDMA and the Directorate of Higher Education.
During the meeting, officials reviewed current safety standards, infrastructure conditions and the regulatory framework governing coaching institutes in Delhi.
New regulatory framework being prepared
Sood said the Directorate of Higher Education is working on a comprehensive regulatory framework for coaching centres. The proposed framework aims to address gaps in regulation, improve accountability, strengthen safety standards and ensure better monitoring of coaching institutes.
Reiterating the government’s stand on student safety, Sood said, “The safety and welfare of students is our highest priority. Any negligence affecting student safety will not be tolerated. All coaching institutes must strictly comply with safety norms and guidelines issued by the Government and the Courts from time to time.”
