Assam govt launches a massive drugs disposal programme, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma drives road roller to crush seized substances worth ₹472.51 crore

In a powerful demonstration of Assam’s zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today personally drove a road roller to crush seized drugs and psychotropic substances worth ₹472.51 crore at the state-level drugs disposal programme held at the 14th Assam Police Battalion ground in Daulasal, Nalbari district. The event was held as part of a statewide drug disposal programme. The CM also inaugurated the first-ever narcotics incinerator in the state at the event held in Doulasal.

The massive haul, spread across a large open area at the battalion premises, is being scientifically destroyed under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister. Officials said the destruction process, which includes crushing followed by controlled burning, will continue for the next 10 days to ensure complete disposal of the contraband.

The incinerator, provided by the Union Home Ministry, will be used to burn the narcotics after the bottles are crushed. The consignment includes 60 kg of heroin, 39 kg of morphine, 4.97 lakh tablets of various psychotropic substances, 3.2 kg of opium, 38,000 kg of Ganja, other illicit drugs like methamphetamine, Yaba tablets, cocaine, morphine, cough syrup bottles, poppy straw and other narcotic substances.

Visuals from the programme showed the Chief Minister operating the yellow road roller over the vast spread of seized substances to crush them. Later he said, “This disposal process will be continued for the next 10 days. The Union government has given a drug disposal machine. Today we have gathered here to destroy drugs worth Rs 472.51 crore. We will have to be burning these drugs for the next 10 days to destroy it completely.”

Addressing the gathering, CM Sarma said the state has registered more than 3,300 NDPS cases in the last five years and seized drugs worth over ₹3,227 crore. He noted that more than 26,000 persons involved in the drug trade have been arrested and charged under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act to create a strong deterrent.

“Every year, we have seized drugs worth nearly Rs 1,000 crore and arrested numerous persons involved in the trade. Many have already been convicted and imprisoned. Public destruction of seized drugs is important as it sends a strong message to society and to those involved in the narcotics business,” he said.

The CM noted that Assam has increasingly become a transit corridor for narcotics originating from Myanmar, moving through neighbouring northeastern states before being transported to West Bengal and other parts of the country.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the government is now taking the fight to the next level with active support from the Union Government. A coordinated Centre-State approach is being adopted to track the entire inter-state drug network, identify history-sheeters, intercept consignments at the borders before they enter Assam and build watertight prosecution cases.

“We will be ruthless in this fight against drugs. This is both a promise and a warning,” Dr Sarma stated, reiterating the state’s commitment to rid Assam of the drug menace and protect the youth from its devastating effects.

When asked whether fencing the Myanmar will stop drug trafficking, he said that it may not be possible as drugs can be transported through drones or by other innovative methods. He said, “Fencing provides a physical barrier, but the fight against drugs goes beyond fencing. We need technological solutions and stronger mechanisms.”

As part of the statewide drive, seized drugs were destroyed parallelly in several other places in Assam too. In Tamulpur, police destroyed narcotic substances worth ₹71.92 lakh. In Biswanath district, seized drugs worth nearly ₹86 lakh were destroyed at the Panibharal police outpost.

The destruction program was held days after the Assam Legislative Assembly expressed concern over the growing drug menace in the state. In a rare display of unity, all members of the house supported the BJP government’s fight against narcotics.
