India declares one-day national mourning on the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Father Amir of Qatar

The Government of India has declared one-day national mourning on the demise of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Father Amir of the State of Qatar, who passed away at the age of 74 in Doha on Sunday.

As a mark of respect to the departed leader, the national flag will fly at half-mast across India on the day of mourning. The Ministry of External Affairs announced the decision in line with protocol for such occasions, reflecting the deep ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the passing of Sheikh Hamad, describing him as a visionary leader who transformed Qatar into a prosperous and globally influential nation. In a post on social media, PM Modi stated, “We deeply mourn the passing of Father Amir of State of Qatar, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. A visionary leader who led Qatar to great levels of development and prosperity, we remember him also as a true friend whom I had the honour of meeting during my last visit to Qatar in February 2024.”

He conveyed sincere condolences to the current Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the entire royal family, and the people of Qatar, praying for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.

Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, is expected to visit Qatar shortly to convey condolences on behalf of the Government of India to the State of Qatar, said MEA.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, during which he played a pivotal role in modernising the country, developing its vast natural gas resources, and positioning it as a key player in international diplomacy, media, and sports. He is widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar.

Qatar has declared four days of national mourning, with flags at half-mast and suspension of government work as a tribute to the Father Amir. His contributions to strengthening bilateral relations with India, particularly in energy, trade, and people-to-people ties, will be remembered fondly. India and Qatar share strong historical and strategic partnerships, with a significant Indian expatriate community in the Gulf nation.
