On Sunday, 26th July, the flood situation in Assam improved, but the disaster continues to affect lakhs of people across the state. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 5.24 lakh people are still impacted in five districts, while two people lost their lives during the last 24 hours, taking the total flood death toll this year to 68.
The latest deaths were reported from Charaideo district, where both victims drowned in floodwaters. Officials said Charaideo remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 1.9 lakh people facing the flood situation. Sivasagar has over 1.5 lakh affected people, followed by Jorhat with around 1.4 lakh.
Fewer people were affected than a day earlier
The ASDMA said 5,24,700 people are currently affected in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts. This is an improvement from Saturday, when nearly 6.55 lakh people across six districts were affected.
Even though the overall situation has improved, floodwaters are still causing problems in many parts of the state. The latest bulletin said 763 villages remain submerged, while 48,742.09 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged. Floods have also caused damage to embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure in several districts.
Rescue teams remain on the ground
Relief and rescue work is continuing in the affected areas. The state administration is operating 354 relief camps and aid distribution centres across four districts, where 37,724 displaced people are being provided shelter and essential supplies.
The Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Service, and Assam Police have carried out rescue operations in different parts of Upper Assam, helping people trapped by floodwaters.
River level remains a concern
The ASDMA said the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh is still flowing above the danger mark, and authorities are keeping a close watch on the water level. The floods have also affected 88,240 domestic animals and poultry, adding to the challenges faced by rural communities.
While the number of affected people has come down compared to the previous day, the floods continue to disrupt normal life across Assam. Thousands of families remain displaced, farmland has suffered heavy losses, and damaged infrastructure is making recovery efforts more difficult. Authorities are continuing relief operations as they monitor the situation in the affected districts.
