Fact Check: Congress, RJD share old video to falsely claim BJP leader Arjun Singh hoisted party flag instead of tricolour on Independence Day

A video of West Bengal BJP leader and Labour & Transport Minister Arjun Singh hoisting a BJP flag has been shared on social media with a misleading claim that he did so in place of the tricolour during the Independence Day celebrations.

The video was shared by Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate (@SupriyaShrinate) on X on 15th August. Her post claimed that Arjun Singh (@ArjunsinghWB) had hoisted the BJP flag in place of the Tiranga and called him a “wretched traitor”.

RJD also shared the video on its official Facebook handle, accusing Singh of hoisting the BJP flag instead of the national flag.

What the video actually shows

The video is real, but its date has been presented incorrectly. Arjun Singh clarified that the footage was recorded on 6th July, 2026, during the inauguration of his office in Barrackpore or a related party programme.

The event took place around the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee, founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Singh hoisted the BJP flag during that programme, which was held more than a month before Independence Day.

Therefore, the video does not show Singh hoisting the BJP flag during an Independence Day programme.

Arjun Singh’s response

Reacting to the posts, Singh said opposition parties, including the Congress/INC and RJD, were using the old video to spread false propaganda and mislead people. He said the video had been shared without giving its actual date and urged those circulating it to verify the facts before posting such content.

Singh also said that the parties and individuals responsible should correct the information. He accused the Congress and RJD of deliberately spreading false information against him and announced that he would take legal action against the two parties.
