Assam: Babul Ali and Shukur Ali dress up as ‘kanwariyas’ to steal mobile phones during Hindu religious procession, arrested

On Wednesday (19th August), the Guwahati Police Commissionerate took to Facebook to inform about the arrest of two men, namely Babul Ali and Sukur Ali, who stole mobiles during a Hindu procession.

In a statement, the police said, “An EGPD team from Basistha PS cracked a mobile phone theft case linked to a religious procession with the arrest of two thieves — Babul Ali (22) and Sukur Ali (22), both from Dhubri.”

The cops informed that 6 mobile phones were recovered from them. “Six stolen smartphones were recovered and seized from their possession. Legal action initiated,” they added.

It is interesting to note that Babul Ali and Shukur Ali, who are Muslims by Faith, dressed up as ‘Kanwariyas’ to commit the crime. The duo wore saffron shirts and had similar headbands.

OpIndia has previously reported incidents wherein Muslim men were caught or detained while posing as Hindu sadhus and seers. In October 2021, two Muslim youths were detained and questioned by local authorities in Ayodhya and questioned after being found roaming while dressed as Hindu ascetics.
