Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) has won a transmission project worth an estimated Rs 4,700 crore in Maharashtra for the evacuation of renewable energy generated in Karnataka to major load centres in the state, while also supporting pumped storage projects in the Satara, Pune and Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The project, formally titled “Network Expansion Scheme in Western Region to Cater to Pumped Storage Potential near Satara (up to 4500 MW) – Part A,” was secured through the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process, with AESL emerging as the lowest bidder.
The project is expected to facilitate the evacuation of up to 4.5 GW of pumped storage potential in Maharashtra and strengthen the inter-regional transmission corridor connecting the Western and Southern grids. It will be implemented through the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Satara Power Transmission Ltd. and is scheduled to be delivered within 36 months.
As part of the project, AESL will add 562 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity to its portfolio. This will take the company’s cumulative transmission network to 29,739 ckm, with total transformation capacity rising to 1,43,425 MVA.
The infrastructure to be developed includes a 765/400 kV substation at Satara, a Kolhapur-Satara 765 kV double-circuit transmission line, and augmentation of the Kolhapur pooling station, along with associated transmission infrastructure.
Commenting on the project, Adani Energy Solutions CEO Kandarp Patel said pumped storage projects are becoming a critical component of India’s clean energy transition by providing the flexibility and reliability needed to integrate large-scale renewable energy into the grid.
Patel said the Satara transmission project would provide a transmission backbone for renewable energy evacuation and energy storage deployment while strengthening power flows between Southern and Western India.
The company said the project comes as India works towards its target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, with transmission infrastructure serving as a key link between renewable-energy-rich regions and major industrial and urban load centres.
With the latest win, AESL’s transmission order book stands at approximately Rs 85,000 crore, according to the company’s media release.
AESL said it currently has a cumulative transmission network of 29,739 ckm and 1,43,425 MVA of transformation capacity. The company also operates in electricity distribution, smart metering and cooling solutions.
