On Saturday, 26th September, eggs and stones were thrown at Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC) spokesperson and MLA Kunal Ghosh’s car in Uttarpara, Hooghly, while he was travelling to Serampore to attend a rally addressed by his party chief and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. “Kunal Ghosh go back” slogans were also raised by the people. Afterwards, Ghosh turned back and returned to Kolkata.

Ghosh stated that his vehicle was targeted on the way to the rally and he blamed BJP workers for it. However, the people seen in the videos were not carrying any BJP flags. Furthermore, the saffron party strongly refuted his statements as well.
Ghosh charged that a group of people carrying sticks and rods surrounded his vehicle and raised slogans before another group blocked the road. According to him, eggs and bricks were thrown at the car, damaging both the front and rear windshields.
“BJP goons attacked my car while I was on my way to attend Banerjee’s rally. A mob, armed with lathis, rods, shoes and carrying black posters, was shouting slogans. A second mob blocked the road. They hurled eggs and bricks and broke both the windshields. Glass shards fell all over me. I couldn’t go any further,” claimed Ghosh.
Ghosh further accused that there was no police presence at the spot. “Not a single policeman was there. They want us to believe that there was no intelligence input. I will return to Kolkata and go straight to Bhabani Bhavan (state police headquarters) so that the police top brass can see what has happened. I am lucky that the driver wasn’t injured, else we would have got stranded there,” he alleged.
BJP rejects Ghosh’s claim
BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said the party had received information that supporters of Mamata-led TMC faction MP Kalyan Banerjee had opposed Ghosh’s entry into the area. He mentioned that this could be linked to the attack and added that Ghosh was pointing fingers at the BJP instead.
“We have received some inputs from unconfirmed sources that supporters of TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee have said that they will not allow Ghosh to enter the area, and that’s why they attacked his car. Ghosh can’t say this in public as it would be a huge embarrassment for the party. That’s why he is dragging the BJP,” Sarkar conveyed.
Sarkar also condemned the damage to the MLA’s vehicle and called for action if the allegations against Kalyan Banerjee’s supporters were found to be true.
Mamata Banerjee’s Serampore rally
The incident took place ahead of Mamata Banerjee’s rally at Serampore Court Ground. The Calcutta High Court has allowed the meeting on September 26, with a maximum limit of 1,000 people.
