India’s largest renewable energy developer, Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), has strengthened its sustainability strategy by integrating the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework into its business. AGEL says this step moves beyond traditional ESG compliance toward a new model where biodiversity protection is ensured alongside green energy growth.
In financial year 2024, AGEL began assessments at all its operational locations, identifying ecological dependencies, risks, and opportunities even before joining the TNFD group. CEO Ashish Khanna said that this approach ensures that the renewable energy developer contributes to strengthening natural ecosystems and biodiversity.
AGEL’s efforts are supported by several global organizations such as UNEP, FI, UNDP, the World Wildlife Fund, and Global Canopy. These organizations provide a global framework for assessing nature-related risks. By adopting this framework, AGEL has become one of the leading renewable energy companies in the world that incorporates biodiversity into its decision-making.
AGEL has also pledged to achieve a “no biodiversity loss” target by 2030. To achieve this, the company has planned to plant 27 million trees at its project sites.
