Hours after a draft report was submitted by the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) committee to Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, the AIMIM staged a protest outisde the Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad on Saturday (21st March).
The party workers claimed that UCC, meant to ensure uniformity in matters of marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption and maintenance, was against Sharia law.
They raised slogans against the Gujarat government and staged a demonstration with banners in their hands. The banners read – ‘Remove UCC’, ‘Save the Nation’, ‘Repeal UCC’.

It later came to light that the protest was carried out without the required police permission. The AIMIM members tried to create chaos on the street, following which the Ahmedabad police swung into action and detained 12-13 of them.
Later, all protestors were removed, and the situation was brought under control. One burqa-clad woman even argued that Sharia law does not allow for the existence of a law such as the UCC.
Other AIMIM party workers vowed to oppose the law and prevent its implementation in Gujarat. They claimed that the proposed UCC was against their ‘religious and cultural rights’.

It must be mentioned that the UCC bill will be introduced in the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha on 24th March this year.
