Dispute begins over man sent across border
According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local sources, BSF personnel from the Dawakamari camp in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district opened a gate in the border fencing near the 855th main pillar and sent the man into Bangladeshi territory through the area near the fifth sub-pillar.
Residents who witnessed the incident informed BGB officials. A patrol team from Kalirhat Camp of the 61 BGB (Tista-2) Battalion quickly reached the location and escorted the man back to the zero line through the same route. Officials said his speech and behaviour suggested that he was mentally unstable.
Witnesses said tensions rose when BSF personnel again attempted to move the man towards Bangladesh after he had been returned. The development angered villagers living near the border.
As word spread, a crowd gathered carrying sticks and sharp weapons and moved towards the BSF personnel. The villagers rushed towards the Indian border guards, creating a brief but tense confrontation in the border area.
BGB steps in, both forces remain alert
BGB personnel intervened and persuaded the villagers to disperse, preventing the situation from worsening. The border area later returned to normal, although security forces on both sides remained watchful.
A senior BGB source said the matter had been reported to higher authorities. The force also lodged a formal protest with the commander of the BSF’s Dawakamari camp, asking that the man be taken back into Indian territory.
As of the latest information, the man was seen around 100 yards inside the Indian side of the zero line. BGB and BSF personnel continue to remain on alert following the incident.
